Siena Marble Table Tops at Christie’s auction of Will Fisher’s collection next week.
For the last year or so I’ve been making notes of my favorite marble specimens for an upcoming kitchen renovation. As it turns out, most of my favorites have long since been mined dry, leaving the only option to find salvaged pieces. I’ve had an idea about stumbling upon some nice slabs of Convent Siena— an Italian marble that was often used as a detail in very fine Georgian mantels. There are two smallish tabletop slabs at at Christie’s Auction in London next week, which have a combined estimate of $11000-18000. I guess that’s not happening. Beautiful though, right? The auction is the collection of Will Fisher, a London antique dealer. It’s probably the nicest collection of things I’ve ever seen at auction. If I had the resources I think I’d bid on about 80% of the lots.
