Photographs of Old Things

Early 1900s Carved Bog Oak House, Inscribed “An Irish Cottage” $150
A late 19th or early 20th century souvenir of Ireland.  It’s carved from bog oak— a naturally black form of fossilized wood found in peat bogs in Ireland.  In the Victorian era it was often used for mourning jewelry.  Into the late 19th century, it became the material of choice for Irish souvenirs.  We’ve had lots of little bits of jewelry carved with harps and clovers over the years, and a few little trinkets, but I’ve never seen a house before.
